Day hiked to the lake Thursday, 10/12/17. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from May until September. Hiked 5/30. Then hike up to Trail Rider Pass and drop down to Snowmass Lake. This is by far my favorite hike/trail run in the valley. The easiest and most popular stretch of trail runs from the West Buttermilk Road to the Snowmass Cross-Country Center. This is a 8.5 mile dirt trail that follows East Snowmass Creek in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness near Snowmass Village, CO. To get to the Snowmass side trailhead from Snowmass Village, travel up Brush Creek Road and turn right on Divide Road. Owl Creek This popular and scenic trail connects Aspen and Snowmass Village, hugging the south side of the Roaring Fork and Owl Creek valleys. The trail is a little less obvious on the other side of the pass, but still easy to follow. Trail Description The Owl Creek Trail connects Snowmass Village to Aspen starting near the intersection of Brush Creek and Owl Creek Roads near the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village and traveling East, crossing the Owl Creek drainage on to the Buttermilk Ski Area. Last two miles to the Lake were difficult due to the 1 to 3 feet of snow drifts and ~40 mph winds. The wind can get pretty strong when you get to the lake. If you don't have 4WD, park in the BLM meadow on the right approximately 2-1/4 miles below the trailhead. Bring bug spray. The first 3 miles or so are hilly so there is some decrease in elevation in the beginning, but the last 2 miles are nothing but up. - Increase your productivity, customize your experience, and engage in information you care about. Heading back you can go the same direction or Hike over to Buckskin Pass and down to West Maroon Creek. Fortunately, Snowmass Village is naturally blessed with the components of a world-class trails system: good terrain, good views, and good infrastructure. West Snowmass Trail is a 16.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Snowmass, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. Dogs must be on leash at all times on all Town trails, and please be courteous and clean up after your dog. Amazing hike! Leash law strictly enforced. Please be aware all E-bikes including E-boards are prohibited on all unpaved and dirt trails in Snowmass Village. The wildflowers were beautiful and everywhere! The Maroon-Snowmass Trail to Snowmass Lake is at the end of the gravel road. It's going to take you 3 hrs to get to the lake and 3 hrs to down hike but it's worth it! Views from the saddle extend southeast to the high peaks of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The tough part of this hike is the last 2 miles of the hike in and the last mile of the down hike because you end the hike by going back up the switch backs up to the parking lot. There are lots of site at the lake, so while we chose to do this as a day hike, it would be a great overnighter too. The lightly used trail climbs to a saddle at the top of a ridge separating the Snowmass and Capitol Creek Valleys. Amazing just don't camp in cow pastures and you'll enjoy every bit of it. would recommend trekking poles for the way back since it’s a lot of downhill. The trail is rated for beginners, but is moderately challenging because of substantial elevation gain. Brush Creek Trail; Tom Blake Trail; Stark's Trail; Trail Description. Last mile to the lake is almost impossible to follow with deep snow covering the trail. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out.
