About

Give your kids the best education possible.

School Choice puts our children at the center of our educational priorities by giving them more options, whether that’s public, private, or online schooling. In the past, Oregon parents like you have been frustrated at the options they have to place their kids in a school that meets their needs. This is especially true for families that have lower-income, minority status, or disabilities. Without as many resources available, you’re often stuck with the only school that is in your zip code.

That’s why Cascade Policy Institute created School Choice for Oregon. Since 1991, Cascade Policy Institute has been working to expand options for kids in Oregon. Cascade’s founders helped put an initiative (Measure 11) on Oregon’s 1990 General Election ballot which would have given every Oregon K-12 student a refundable tax credit to exercise full school choice. The measure failed at the polls, prompting them to found Cascade the next year.

Thanks in part to Cascade, children in Oregon have been able to take advantage of new options like charter schools, virtual charter schools, and open enrollment in public schools. Some low-income students also have benefited from private scholarships granted through the Children’s Scholarship Fund-Portland, which is operated by Cascade. To this day, Cascade Policy Institute seeks to give our kids something better than a one-size-fits-all education system.

Our policies give Oregon parents more options.

Cascade Policy Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research and educational organization that focuses on state and local issues in Oregon. Cascade’s mission is to develop and promote public policy alternatives that foster individual liberty, personal responsibility, and economic opportunity. Cascade advances these values by sharing its research with the public, the media, and state and local lawmakers through publications, educational programs, community forums, and special events.
